Biography:
Gollum, originally named Sméagol, is a creature from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth fantasy world. He first appeared in *The Hobbit* (1937) as a shadowy figure inhabiting the Misty Mountains.
Sméagol was a Stoor Hobbit who, on his birthday, found the One Ring. Enamored by its power, he murdered his relative Déagol for it. The Ring corrupted him both physically and mentally, extending his life far beyond a normal Hobbit's lifespan while also twisting him into a gaunt, wretched being.
He became known as Gollum due to the gurgling noises he made in his throat. For centuries, he hid in caves beneath the Misty Mountains, tormented by the Ring and consumed by his desire to possess it. The Ring eventually abandoned him, leading him to pursue it and the new bearer, Frodo Baggins.
